The Statue of Liberty, a huge hollow statue made of thin copper plates embossed on a steel frame, stands on an island at the entrance to New York Harbor. It was designed in Paris by French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi in collaboration with French engineer Gustave Eiffel, and was donated by France for the centennial of American independence in 1876. Its design and construction was recognized at the time as one of the great engineering feats of the 19th century, hailed as combining art with technology. From its pedestal designed by American architect Richard Morris Hunt, the statue has welcomed millions of immigrants to the United States since its dedication in 1886. The statue is a masterpiece of colossal statuary that renewed its expression in the nineteenth century, inspired by antiquity but in the context of Art Nouveau. Referring to classical elements and iconography, it expresses modern aspirations. The internal steel structure is a formidable work of complex construction, a harbinger of the future of engineering, architecture, and art, including the massive use of concrete in its pedestal, the curtain-wall construction that supports the outer layer, and the use of electricity to light the torch. Édouard René de Laboulaye collaborated with Bartholdi in the design of the statue to embody international friendship, peace, progress, and, more specifically, the historic alliance between France and the United States. International fundraising also played a significant role. Among the extremely strong symbols of its design is the U.S. Declaration of Independence that the statue holds in its right hand, as well as the broken chains on which it stands.
